Web Developer

This is an excellent placement opportunity giving real hands on experience in Web Development with this magazine publisher of several on line titles. The successful candidate will gain experience in Web development, Server Administration, Office technical support and Advertising support. Reporting to the IT Manager, key responsibilities and tasks will include:

Web development

* Help maintain, improve and advance existing websites
* Create specifications and delivery estimates for new projects and discuss with other team members before implementing.
* Design, develop and test new websites using PHP, MySQL, PostgreSQL, AJAX, Java and any other appropriate languages or systems.
* Work with other staff in the web development team to complete on time.
* Constantly aim to improve core programming skills and add new techniques/languages to skill set.
* Apply search engine optimisation strategies whilst working on existing or new websites.
* Apply knowledge of industry trends and developments to improve service to our clients
* Server Administration
* Learn the day to day server admin tasks needed to keep the websites running. Including patching of the open source software products used, database maintenance and performance optimisation.
* Know what to do and who to contact when things go wrong with the Company’s servers.
* Periodically organise upgrading of servers and the transferral of data from old to new servers, ensuring minimum downtime throughout.
* Office technical support
* Assist in the support of the office PCs, networks and hardware.
* Help update and install software on all PCs occasionally.
* Advertising support
* Learn and carry out the various methods of adding adverts to websites and respond to the advertising team’s requests to remove, create or add adverts.
* Perform maintenance of the Ad serving system when necessary and change the locations of ad placement in the PHP template.

Hours of Work will be 37.5 per week, Mon – Fri.

Essential requirements:

* Good written & spoken English
* Good communication & interpersonal skills
* Ability to work on own initiative

* Minimum of 1 year experience in the following:
• Database Driven Websites using PHP/MySQL
• Writing valid XHTML and CSS
• User Friendly Implementation
• Good Design Practice

Company activity:

* The Company is a successful magazine publisher with several online products. It was established in 2000.
* Many titles of the titles it produces are concerned with photography. They have a need for work on existing products and have some new projects in development
* They operate from state of the art offices in Shireoaks, near Worksop. The premises have free secure parking and a stylish wireless Internet cafeteria.

Location:

* Worksop is a thriving market town in Nottinghamshire, on the northern edge of Sherwood Forest (famous as the home of the legendary Robin Hood). It has a population of approx. 40,000 and offers a good range of local amenities.
* There is a good number of local places of interest
* The city of Sheffield is 19 miles and the city of Nottingham is 35 miles. Mansfield is 12 miles. All are easily accessible by train.
* There is also a good motorway network giving good access to the surrounding area and the rest of the UK.

Remuneration details:

* A training allowance of £600 a month will be provided to assist with accommodation and subsistence costs. This remuneration package is not negotiable under ANY circumstances.
