Protein Scientist (Trainee)

This is an ideal industrial placement for a student with leading global supplier of complex organic molecules and biomolecules. This role involves the synthesis, purification and characterisation of protein conjugates. Projects must be delivered safely and efficiently to the required quality standards. Daily duties may include:

• Synthesis of protein conjugates in R&D environment
• Development of purification protocols (UF and./or chromatography based)
• Use of appropriate analytical techniques for characterization
• Interpretation, recording and reporting of data
• Participation in scale-up activities (non-GMP and GMP manufacture)
• Process validation activities
• Laboratory environment, possible with manufacturing plant experience too
• Full safety training will be given
• Occasionally, you may be asked to work shifts for a short time (typically 1 week) to help support the processes you have developed, as they move from lab to plant.
• Hours of work 36 per week.

Essential requirements:

• Fluent English – written & spoken
• Studying a Bachelors or Masters degree in Biochemistry, Biological Chemistry, Biotechnology, Biology.
• Knowledge of protein purification using both chromatographic and membrane-based techniques.
• Understanding of general protein handling techniques, and familiarity with protein analysis, particularly chromatography (RPHPLC, IEX, SEC, HIC) and UV assays.
• Ability to work in a laboratory environment following clear safety guidelines is essential, as candidates will be handling toxic molecules
• Good organizational, team-working and communication skills are essential.
• Scientific rigour and ability to solve problems
• Attention to detail
• Good initiative and motivation

Desirable attributes:

• Knowledge of bioconjugation
• Previous laboratory experience

• The Company is a leading global supplier of complex organic molecules and biomolecules to the Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology industries with sites in Canada, UK and India.
• The High Potency Substance business unit is located in Grangemouth, Scotland and focuses on the production of cytotoxic antibody conjugates for the oncology market.
• The Grangemouth site has approx. 40 employees across R&D, QC and manufacturing. The R&D department has approx. 15 staff and is multi-disciplinary (chemists and protein scientists). It provides a dynamic and exciting work environment where staff have the opportunity to develop processes in the lab and then to take them through scale-up to the manufacturing plant. It is a friendly team-orientated environment with a strong international flavour.

Location:

• Grangemouth is in the central belt of Scotland, and finding local accommodation is not a problem.
• The town is located midway between Edinburgh and Glasgow, and is easily commutable. Many staff live in these two locations and lifts can often be arranged for those without their own transport.
• Edinburgh is famous for its castle and historical heritage, and is internationally renowned as a cultural centre.

Remuneration details:

• Allowance of £600 a month will be provided to assist with accommodation and subsistence costs.

This remuneration package is not negotiable under ANY circumstances.
