Consultant Operations Analyst

These placement roles are with a consultancy working principally with the UK National Health Service. They apply operations management and organisational development techniques to improve the quality of patient care and the efficiency of care services.

The role offers an excellent training ground for those wishing to become future operations directors, change management professionals, and mainstream consultants. The work is also a rich source of dissertation material and the Health Service is supportive of this type of endeavour.

You will be part of a team working under a senior consultant.

The core function is the collection and analysis of operational data (from IT systems and through personal observation) to create an accurate description of how the care service performs.

This information is then used to identify opportunities and make the case for change and to shape solutions. Clinical and managerial staff are then coached as they implement their new design and put in place control measures to help them sustain the improvement.

80% of the work takes place at the client site which may be anywhere in the UK. The work will likely include hotel stays.

Hours of work – this is not a 0900 to 1700 job. The team typically stays on site four days a week between 0800 and 1900 hours. Then spends the fifth day working on internal projects.

If you demonstrate the right flair and experience the role may be extended to include client-facing consultancy i.e. engaging with executives and clinical staff to present your work and use it to help them design and implement effective solutions to operational issues.

If you have good software development skills you will use your knowledge to build business process mapping, demand forecasting and capacity modelling tools.

If you have a health outcomes analysis background, the role could be extended to include collation of clinical data to support redesign of healthcare models and the purchase of new care services.

If you have a finance background and of the right seniority the role may include support for operations-led financial turnarounds.

Essential requirements:

Post-graduate reading business with first degree in maths, science, engineering or economics
Or final year undergraduate reading a mathematics, science, engineering or economics
Strong Excel skills including use of statistical tools
Strong written & spoken English so can communicate and engage with sophisticated ideas and analysis
Software and web development skills
PowerPoint skills for preparing and presenting their analysis
Intelligent (to work with smart post-graduates, doctors and executives)
Self motivated and hard working
Scrupulously honest with strong values
Professional appearance

Desirable attributes:

Evidence of formal project management and programme office skills
Six Sigma or statistical process control skills
Strong programming skills in Access, SQL Server, Visual C or similar PC development environments
SQL skills and the ability to write user requirements or report specifications
Experience of designing and preparing staff rotas
Financial literacy

Company activity:

The Company is probably best characterised as an interim executive team.

They apply a combination of operations techniques (Six Sigma, Lean Production, Statistical Process Control) and organisational techniques (intervention theory, coaching, training, change management) to help parts of the National Health Service radically improve the quality of care and the efficiency of their operations. They work in an integrated way from executive board to front line staff.

The role is national but principally in the South East and West of England. West of London or the Buckinghamshire area would be good home bases.

The Company is prepared to formally train the right individuals, who are available for 12 months, to become Lean Sigma green belts once they have demonstrated that they are effective

Location:

Based in Hampton, Middlesex. Hampton is very pleasant town, located inside the M25 motorway, and close to Richmond-on-Thames, Kingston-on-Thames and Twickenham.

There are an excellent range of amenities and facilities locally and in the surrounding towns

Central London is easily accessible – 35 minutes by rail.

Heathrow Airport is also convenient.

Remuneration details:

A training allowance of £1000 per month will be provided to assist with accommodation and subsistence costs.

This remuneration package is not negotiable under ANY circumstances.
