Paid International Development Internships
WHO WE ARE: Established in 1985 our company is a Washington, DC-based, non-partisan, not-for-profit organization dedicated to empowering farmers and entrepreneurs and increasing and sustaining rural incomes in less developed parts of the world. This is accomplished through developing value-adding agricultural enterprises and strengthening farmer-market linkages. Our company focuses on commercial activity, locally defined needs, and leveraged investment in order to foster the economic empowerment of rural residents and enterprises all along the food value chain—from farmers to local suppliers and processors, to larger companies, financial institutions, and distributors and exporters.
Each term we hire 4 interns who work for $1000/month stipends (pre-tax), receive 2 (summer) or 3 (fall and spring) vacation days, and are expected to work 40 hours per week in one of the following departments: Asia, Middle East and North Africa; Central and Eastern Europe; New Business Development; and Operations and Compliance.
1. Asia, Middle East and North Africa (AMENA) Internship: Under the supervision of the Program Officer, the intern assists in the implementation of farmer development projects in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Sudan. Specific responsibilities include:
• Participate in discussions of program strategy and in researching new project opportunities.
• Arrange logistics for agribusiness experts undertaking training assignments abroad (e.g. country background reports, travel arrangements, visits to embassies for visa processing, etc).
• Review, edit and translate (given the necessary skill set) program documents as necessary, including grant proposals, budgets, quarterly reports.
• Prepare program data for collection and analysis.
2. Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) Internship: Under supervision of the Program Director and working in close collaboration with the CEE Team, the intern assists in implementing and monitoring the Agribusiness Development Project (ADP) in Moldova, as well as the Farmer-to-Farmer Agribusiness Volunteer Program (AVP) in Moldova, Ukraine, and Belarus; both funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). Specific responsibilities include:
• Research information from various sources and summarize findings for the ADP.
• Review and edit program documents as necessary, including grant proposals and quarterly reports.
• Create 1-2 page grant summaries for the Program Coordinator or for distribution at strategy meetings.
• Attend and participate in CNFA staff meetings related to ADP implementation, program strategy, and new project opportunities.
• Arrange logistics for agribusiness experts and volunteers undertaking training assignments abroad (e.g. country background reports, travel arrangements, visits to embassies for visa processing, etc).
3. New Business Development (NBD) Internship: Under the supervision of the Program Development Director and the Executive Projects Officer, the intern provides assistance in country and sector research, proposal development and consultant recruiting. Specific responsibilities include:
• Work with senior management in creation of proposals including: country and sector research and analysis, recruitment of personnel and consultants, and technical writing and editing.
• Track opportunities with key funding agencies including USAID, MCC, and USDA.
• Create and/or edit news releases, promotional materials, our E-newsletter, website text and content, brochures, and other public outreach publications or multimedia material to be distributed to stakeholders, donors, partners, and other audiences.
• Provide administrative, graphics, and production support in preparing proposals.
4. Operations and Compliance (OC) Internship: Under the supervision of the Director of Operations and Compliance and in close collaboration with the OC team, provides administrative and functional support to CNFA program operations and finance department with regard to CNFA’s overseas and Washington offices. Specific responsibilities include: Assist with accounting functions, including organizational and project accounting, grant financial management, invoicing and data entry. Specific responsibilities include:
• Assist with project management, such as compliance monitoring, subcontract development and monitoring, budgeting, expense tracking and inventory tracking. Assist with cost proposals and plans and preparation for CNFA’s annual meeting.
• Undertake occasional ad hoc tasks such as visits to embassies, banks, and airports, assisting visitors, travel arrangements and other general office operations.
Shared/Universal Intern Responsibilities:
• Contribute to the writing and recruiting efforts for USAID and Millennium Challenge Corporation proposals.
• Rotate receptionist duty with the other three interns.
• Provide administrative support as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS: The candidate should be a college junior, senior, a recent graduate, or a graduate student; have a minimum GPA of 3.0; possess strong research and writing skills; have excellent computer skills, especially in the formatting, graphs, diagrams and tables; and demonstrate an interest in international issues. Prior office experience and knowledge of another language is preferred, but not required. International applicants are eligible only under a proper visa entitling them to receive pay for their work in the US (typically a J-1 or F-1 Optional Practical Training (OPT)). CNFA does not sponsor work visas and a tourist visa will not suffice. International applicants attending a US university should ascertain their eligibility through their dean, academic advisor, or registrar’s office. International applicants not attending a US university are strongly encouraged to speak with the US Consulate in their country to ascertain their eligibility before going to the trouble of applying. In their cover letter they should also mention any visa arrangements they have made or plan to make.
