IT Project Assistant

Working with the System Analyst & Programmer, this placement opportunity provides an IT degree student key experience of working on commercial development projects. You will gain experience of the entire Software development project cycle, from project initiation to testing and implementation. The department receives a large number of requests for change that need attention. Responsibilities and tasks of this position will involve delivering that attention.

Typical projects may be as follows:
Design and Implement a New modernised version of the Intranet, including proper Content Management and Active Directory Integration. This will involve talking to key people within the business to determine exactly what is required, proposing an appropriate solution and developing the required software. This will be done using a combination of Windows Sharepoint Services and ASP.NET (VB).

There are a large number of Access Databases that currently run core business systems. These databases all need to be replaced with robust applications written in a combination of VB.NET and ASP.NET and storing all data in MS SQL Server. Each of these jobs is a project in its own right and will involve discussing requirements with Key Users and designing, developing and implementing an appropriate solution.

The External Website currently needs maintaining manually. There are no realistic tools to allow this to be done by the appropriate people, which results in regular requests for new articles to be published or content to be changed. This should be redeveloped to include appropriate content management tools.

Essential requirements:

Fluent English
Student of degree course in Information Systems, Business Information Systems or IT discipline
Working Knowledge of the following Programming Languages: Visual Basic .NET, ASP.NET, HTML, SQL.
Previous experience of working with databases including reporting
Enthusiastic and self-motivated
Works well as part of a team but can show initiative to work alone
Good communication skills both verbally and written
Someone who likes to find solutions to a variety of issues
Analytical skills

Desirable attributes:

3rd year of study or Masters student preferred
Previous experience in a similar role or environmen

Based in Wythenshawe, a large conurbation in Manchester located to the south of the city centre

There is good local housing and general amenities. Excellent transport links to Manchester City Centre.

The City Centre of Manchester is 6 miles and offers the full range of amenities, commercial and social – shops, pubs, clubs, restaurants, theatres etc. It is a cosmopolitan city with a large student population.

Very good road and rail networks give easy access to all areas of the country.

Close to Manchester International Airport

Remuneration details:
A training allowance of £800 a month will be provided to assist with accommodation and subsistence costs.
This remuneration package is not negotiable under ANY circumstances.
